Svadhyaya - Self Study
Water the seeds of your mind with the content that will enable it to grow. 💦 🧠
In yoga, we can do this through Svadhyaya, ‘Self study’ or study of sacred texts. The term Svadhyaya means ‘one’s own reading’ or ‘self-study’. It is the practice of studying scriptures, as well as a practice of studying our own Self. It is the 4th Niyama of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras and is a practice of deep inner reflection, beyond the physical practice.
There are thousands of yogic texts containing fascinating, inspiring and transformational teachings to study the path of yoga in all of its many forms- some of which are The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, The Bhagavad Gita, and The Hatha Yoga Pradipika.
Yogic philosophy can teach us the nature of Self, of mind, of ego, and of the Universe. However our practice doesn’t end there, we must use what we learn in books to then shine a light on our own self. Studying our habits, thoughts, actions, and tendencies. Watching where we get triggered or loose our center. This study of our own self will highlight the areas in our life that need our loving attention and the discipline of our practice.
Daily study and exposure to insightful & meaningful content will keep the presence of the Divine in the forefront of your mind- infusing into everything you do, say, and think. In Patanali’s Yoga Sutras it states, “Study thy self, discover the divine” II.44. Whether it's reading articles online, watching documentaries, listening to lectures, or a book that guides closer towards ‘Self-realization’, integrate it as a part of your daily practice in cultivating Svadhyaya - igniting your own path of inner growth and transformation.
